Back at ya with another Valentine’s related post! I think I’ve said it before but I got super into DIY-ing in 2020 and I feel that creativeness is definitely carrying into 2021 so far. I’ve been loving making homemade pom poms and thought it would be cute to try and recreate a farmhouse-y garland that you would see in Michaels or HomeGoods. I’ve noticed the hype around those felt ball garlands and pom pom ones and I love buying them. However, I also knew I could make it on my own easily after learning to make poms poms and I’m so glad I decided to give it a try. I think this turned out stinking adorable and I am very excited to share it 🙂
You will need:
-three different colors of yarn (I chose pink, peach, and white to stay on brand for Valentine’s Day)
-two sheets of felt (I chose red, again for Valentine’s Day)
-any thick string like twine
-thread and needle
-scissors or an x-Acto knife
-pom pom maker (optional)
The first thing you will need to do is make your pom poms. I use a pom pom maker from amazon, but you can also make them by cutting two pieces of cardboard into the shape of the letter C. This tutorial helped me learn what to do! You’ll need at least 5 pom poms of each of the three colors you choose. This makes a relatively smaller garland, so just measure the space you plan to hang it and add as many more pom poms that you’ll need! When making the poms, make sure to leave some yarn long enough to tie them on the string later on.
Set them aside and move onto making the felt hearts. Trace the shape of a heart 8 times on the felt sheets and cut them out. Pair them in twos. Grab some cotton balls and fill each pair. I ripped a cotton ball in half and used one half for each, but you could also use any craft filling you have on hand.
Next, sew the hearts shut. I just used a white needle and thread. I’m really not the best at sewing, so trust me if I can do this, you can! Just double loop the thread and tie a big knot. Sew every other way until the heart is shut and tie another not. If sewing is too much for you, you can glue it together and draw on the stitch marks for a similar effect 🙂
Now all you have to do is assemble! Line your garland up how you want it to look. I did three poms and a heart and repeated 4 time, minus one heart at the end. My order was peach pom pom, white, and pink followed by a heart, but you can do it any way you please!
Grab some string and tie the pom poms on as tight as you can. Cut off the excess string. Next attach a heart. Just poke a hole through the upper center of it and add some thread through. Use the thread to tie it on the string as well. It should sit perfectly. Repeat until your garland is done.
After that, you’re finished! This is so stinkin’ cute and so easy. It would be fun to recreate for so many different holidays as well. I hope you love it as much as I do 🙂
