I am so excited about today’s post! This year I really wanted to challenge myself to be creative and start doing some more DIYs. I had the idea to make a wreath for the season, and I had planned on a gold wreath for quite some time now! I have always liked the look of gold wreaths, they are definitely different than other basics seen in store and tend to look elegant and natural at the same time. Buuut, they can be on the pricier side and sometimes they just aren’t the right tone of gold. The best thing about making a DIY is that you can customize everything to just how you like it.
That said, I made this DIY gold wreath in more of a copper-y and bronze gold tone, because it felt more autumnal to me, rather than straight up gold which can remind me more of Christmas at times. Since I knew most of the wreath would be one color, I made sure to add a bunch of different textures to my wreath, achieved with 2 types of faux leaves, faux cranberries, and Dollar Tree mini foam pumpkins. This ensures the wreath won’t look flat or boring. I also decided to add some dried bunny tails for some even more dimension and just a pop of natural fall color. Overall I am absolutely in love with how this turned out. It is unlike anything I’ve ever seen in stores and if you use mostly dollar store materials, it won’t break the bank!
Unfortunately my local Dollar Trees have been consistently sold out of fall decor, so I had to go to my local craft store. However, if that’s the case for you as well, you should still be able to make this wreath for under $30 with coupons! Let me break down this beautiful DIY gold wreath for you.
You will need:
- 1 medium wreath form (I got mine from the Dollar Tree)
- Some form of string or ribbon
- Gold spray paint (here is the color I purchased)
- 2 bunches of faux leaves, preferably 2 different kinds
- 1 bunch of faux cranberries
- Mini pumpkins (they come in a pack on sticks at Dollar Tree)
To start you’re going to need to cut your leaves off of the stem. I left some longer on the stem and simply pulled others off for single, detached leaves. Lay down some paper bags and spray paint in a well-ventilated area. You only need to spray paint one side of the leaves, since you really won’t see the other side once glued in place. If you really want to spray paint all sides, go for it! You’ll just need a bigger can of spray paint. Also, be careful painting the pumpkins. The spray paint crumbled about half of my pumpkins and I was only left with three decent ones, so my advice would be to hand paint those or very gently spray.
Let dry completely! In the mean time, get your wreath form and tie your ribbon in a loop at the top. This will make the wreath easier to hang and will also help you keep track of the top of your wreath while you glue the leaves in place. It should only take 30 minutes or less for the leaves to dry.
Now, all that’s left to do is get creative! I hot glued my bigger leaves in a circular shape in the center, some singular ones flat and some still attached to branches within the wire form. I then did the same thing with my smaller leaves on the outer part of the form. I filled in any empty spaces with various leaves before gluing on the cranberries on the inner part of the form. Next, I added two of the mini pumpkins on each side and one on the bottom center of the form. Lastly, I glued in some of the bunny tails in various places for more texture!
(p.s please don’t forget to pull off excess hot glue strings like I did in this picture :/ ).
That’s it! It truly is so simple but it turns out absolutely stunning. I think this color of gold in tandem with the cranberries and bunny tails makes it look extra high-end as well. There are so many different ways you can do this. You can leave the leaves in their natural color for a more harvest-y look, or even do three different metallic shades on the leaves. Get creative and have fun 🙂
